A Day in Austria

Part two of our girly weekend in Munich didn't actually involve Munich, funnily enough.  Instead, we again heaved ourselves out of bed and hopped in the car to drive south east into Austria.  And then back over the German border briefly to make our first stop at the Dokumentation Obersalzburg, above, a museum which 'serves to reflect on the National Socialist past'.  It's free for students, takes around 1-2 hours to look round, and is well worth a look. 

Following the museum, we drove another 40 minutes or so to get to Salzburg in Austria, where Chiara's grandparents live.  

We were met with a thick, fresh blanket of snow and a mountain range backdrop.  

After filling up on steamy goulash for lunch, we headed into the town for a look around.

Salzburg seemed to me to be one of those places where you can easily spend a couple of hours just walking around and taking everything in.  

Again, there are some pretty impressive churches, if that's your thing.

 And a rather fancy Spar?!  Who would've known that in Germany these are borderline luxury convenience stores.  This one featured a deli counter, selection of fine wines, sold fresh pastries and fruit... a far cry from the UK's Spar offerings. 

 

We finished the day by walking across one of the bridges in the city, which was covered in love locks, before heading home, ordering pizza, and watching a film - classic.

A Girly Weekend in Munich

As you may or may not know, Chiara, one of my housemates is originally from Munich, and a couple of weeks ago we all went over to stay with her for a weekend of sightseeing, eating and drinking.  And in true Chiara style, we couldn't have been better taken care of.  We were picked up from the airport and chauffered like queens, arriving home to a delectable spread of traditional Bavarian food and plenty (I mean plenty) of wine.   

Having filled ourselves to the brims with food, we put on our glad rags ready for our first night out on the town... of which I have some pictures that nobody wants to see - hence, the night was a great success!   

Saturday morning we rose not so bright-and-early (but still before midday) to a sparklingly sunny day.  We slowly got ready to face the day, which began with more traditional Bavarian food with Chiara's mother and aunt at a beautiful restaurant with a roof terrace that looked out onto the River Isar.    

I had an enormous portion of pork, gravy and knödel - potato dumplings - with a sauerkraut style salad to accompany it.  And, as if that wasn't enough, for pudding we were all introduced to  kaiserschmarrn, roughly translating to 'Emperor's mess'.  But it was an utterly delicious mess.  Think chunky pieces of fluffy pancake, sprinkled with powdered sugar and fried with butter and sliced almonds.  Yeah, I know, we were all in love.

Stomachs filled once again, we headed off to get the train into the city centre to see the sights.  We started with the town hall (above) before climbing the Alter Peter - a tower of no less than 299 steps...

...which was 100% worth it.  We went at the perfect time in the afternoon when the sun was just starting to set, so we got an incredible view of a winter sun-soaked city, bathed in ochre tones.

We finished off the day with a couple of other churches, a little bit of shopping, and a wander through Hofbräuhaus am Platzl - which gave us a tiny snippet of what Oktoberfest would be like (beer, music, beer, laughing, beer etc.).  

Saturday evening we headed out on the town once again... and Sunday we made our way to Austria.  To be continued...

Is it Spring yet?

 

Saturday was a rather special day, because it was the first day in a very long time that I dared to venture out the house with anything less than 4 layers and a thick winter jacket on.  I know.  

One of my favourite winter warmers this year has definitely been this scarf from ASOS.  Usually I'm not one for camel tones as I find they really clash with my hair, but I was on the lookout for a new scarf anyway and couldn't resist this one.  I think it's going to work excellently as a transitional piece between winter and spring in a few months time, so a good investment all-round.

Sunnies - French Connection / Boots - TK Maxx / Bag - Charity shop

I'm a big fan of denim jackets (in fact, anything denim), all year round.  I love oversized styles like this one I got from Zara a couple of years ago.  I think denim jackets are well worth the investment, too, as they're so versatile and never go out of style.
